I once heard someone say that selfishness is like gravity. We can learn to deal with it, we can see the effects, but we can never get rid of it. We all struggle with placing too much emphasis on "us". Society conditions us to do that. But Jesus wants just the opposite.
Philippians 2:5-7 says that Jesus is our ultimate example of putting others ahead of himself. If anyone ever deserved to be selfish it is Jesus. He is after all our creator. But he chose to put God's Kingdom ahead of his personal comfort. And he expects us to do the same.
If your children can read have each member of your family thumb thru the Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and find a story that they think shows how Jesus put others ahead of himself.
If you have smaller kids you may have to find the stories yourself and then relay them to your family. The more we focus on how awesome Jesus is the less we will be tempted to think too much of ourselves.
